Power consumption: the ssd demands more power.ģ. The only difference between my drives is. Inside the newly booted system, I could see my mechanical hdds, but not the ssd one, though I knew it worked fine.ġ. I found an old backup system hdd on a usb drive, attached it, and the Mac booted up like a charm even if the backup was from another machine and hardware (marvelous machines, the Macs!). Turns out that both the ram riser and the ssd are perfectly working: my wife's MBP boots normally with my ssd, and swapping ram riser in my Mac pro yields the same result (the Mac powers up with one riser, but not with two). I go "fantastic, RAM and SSD fried together!", but I'm not the person who lets things be, so I tried more. But not for long: a flashing folder with a ? mark appears instead of the normal boot screen. Then I thought "maybe a ram bank went bad", and disconnected one of the two riser cards, totally random. It kept shutting down a couple of seconds after being powered up, no matter what I tried. Then last evening I went to the Mac again, switched my ups on (1000va for the chassis alone, nothing else is attached), powered up the Mac and bzzzz click, it shut down immediately all by itself. A root permissions repair and an smc reset solved the problem a couple of times, but it kept coming back in a matter of days. ![]() The machine seemed to perform normally, but I double checked each and every Smart value for the disks: everything was fine. I could hear the mechanical disks inside the chassis spin down, remain silent for 10 mins while the boot screen was black, then power up again and only then the desktop would appear. Notwithstanding an SAD, it took forever to boot. Some days ago my Mac pro early 2008 begun behaving strangely. ![]()
